INDIA IS THE THIRD-
LARGEST PRODUCER
OF CHEMICALS IN ASIA,
AFTER CHINA AND JAPAN
Basic chemicals and their related products
(petrochemicals, fertilisers, paints,
varnishes, glass, perfumes, toiletries,
pharmaceuticals, etc.) form a very
nt part of the Indian economy and
account for about 3 per cent of India's
GDP. Among the most div
industrial sectors, it covers an array of
more than 70,000 commercial products.
The chemicals sector accounts for
about 14 per cent in overall index of
industrial production (IIP), 9 per cent
per cent of total exports and about 7
per cent of total imports.
The total Foreign Direct Investment in
Chemicals (excluding fertilizers) was
US$ 292 million from April 2012 to
March 2013.
In terms of volume, India is the third-
largest producer of chemicals in Asia,
after China and Japan.
Several Indian chemical companies are
strategically positioning themselves in
the global market by expanding their
reach through acquisitions, strategic
alliances and subsidiaries.
Many chemicals manufacturers now
prefer membrane cell technology
to mercury cell technology in order
to be energy efficient and
environment friendly.

Indian chemical companies are
leveraging their manufacturing
expertise and carrying out contract
manufacturing for various international
companies.
Several bulk chemical manufacturers
are also moving up the value chain to
manufacture specialty chemicals.
The production of chemicals is
primarily concentrated in the states of
Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The chemicals industry has matured
being a basic chemical producer to an
innovative products.
The total exports of dyes and dye
intermediates, organic and inorganic
chemicals, including agro-chemicals,
cosmetics and toiletries, essential oils,
agarbattis and castor oil, stood at
US$ 12,170 million in 2011–12.
The UAE, the US, China and Saudi Arabia
are the leading importers of cosmetics,
toiletries and essential oils.
The exports of inorganic, organic &
agro chemicals to the US grew by
approximately 33 per cent between
2007–08 and 2011-12.
