Post MFA world : India ready for freedom run
IBEF: December 27, 2004

On January 1 2005, the multi-fibre agreement will be dismantled, and western markets will be thrown open to countries like India.

Garment manufacturing clusters are emerging across India and a slew of new apparel parks are being set up. Many textile manufacturers are now toying with the idea of entering the apparel business. Traditional textile mills from south India, such as Loyal Textile Mills, Renuka Mills and Superb Spinning Mills, have decided to enter the apparel sector to cash in on the post quota world.

Meanwhile, consolidation has brought down drastically the number of players in the apparel sector. The no. of companies registered with the Apparel Export Promotion Council has dropped from 25,000 to 5,000 in a matter of one year. This has made the industry leaner, fitter and stronger.
