The online education industry in India is growing strongly. As per estimates, the industry is expected to touch US$ 40 billion by 2017. Ishan Gupta, CEO, EduKart.com shares the journey of his venture Edukart.com and the growth plans for the company in an exclusive interaction with IBEF. Edited excerpts:
What is the current market size of distance education industry in India? How do you see the growth potential in this industry?
India has one of the largest education systems in the world and has a wide network of schools and higher education institutes. In the recent years, the distance education industry grown as an alternate to full time on campus education. The current market size of distance education industry in India has reached US$ 2 billion. The initiatives taken by EduKart and other companies will definitely add to expanding the market size.
How has been the journey of EduKart so far? Can you share the growth plans for the company?
The journey of EduKart has been great so far. We have got very encouraging response from students across India in the last two years. We are the largest platform for distance and online education courses in India today. We are partnered with many leading degree granting institutions including Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Symbiosis Centre of Distance Learning, Tamil Nadu Open University, Bharati Vidyapeeth University, All India Management Association and National Institute of Management Technology among others. We are also partners with prominent with leading industry bodies of India to provide industry relevant certification courses. Over the next few months, you will keep on seeing more institutional partners coming on board EduKart and more courses being added onto our platform.
What are your views on the startup ecosystem in India?
India's start-up ecosystem is evolving much faster than ever before. The increasing access to capital and acceptability of failure in society for entrepreneurs have led to more people choosing entrepreneurship as a profession.
