India is expected to overtake USA by 2014 to become the world’s second largest online community after China. The internet user base in the country is expected to move up to 213 million by December 2013 and 243 million by June 2014, up from 205 million in October this year. It is important to note that the internet user base in India took more than a decade to increase from 10 million to 100 million but only three years to double to 200 million users. Rural India has seen 58 per cent year-on-year growth in the number of active internet users since June 2012. And the internet user base in rural India is forecast to reach 72 million by December from 68 million in October. On the other hand, over 50 per cent of the urban internet users access internet on a daily basis, an indicator which sustains this growth trend.
Increasing penetration of mobile internet, rising user base in rural India and increasing usage amongst urban consumers are strong growth drivers for internet user base in the Indian market. Going by the changing consumer behaviour, the mobile phone can soon be expected to become the primary platform for accessing internet in India.
