Started in 1969 by Dr Kasanbhai Patel, Nirma today is a company having an employee base of over 18,000 and an annual turnover of more than Rs 7,000 crore (US$ 1.16 billion*).
Nirma manufactures products in the categories of industrial and consumer products. The industrial products include linear alkyl benzene (LAB), alfa olefin sulfonate (AOS), sulfuric acid, glycerin, soda ash, pure salt, vacuum evaporated iodized salt, sodium silicate and single super phosphate (SSP). The company has undertaken backward integration into manufacture of industrial products such as soda ash, LAB, AOS, fatty acid, glycerine and sulphuric acid.
Its consumer products include soaps under the brand names Nirma and Nima; detergents under the brand name Nirma; edible salt under the brand name Shudh; and scouring products, which include dish washing bars.
Nirma has separate manufacturing facilities for its chemicals like soda ash, linear alkyl benzene, edible and industrial salts. Its salt manufacturing facilities are Asia’s largest salt works. The industrial salt manufacturing facility has a capacity of 1,500,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) while the edible salt manufacturing facility has a capacity of 288,000 TPA.
