Approval for electronics manufacturing hub in Kochi

Kochi: Kinfra’s proposal to develop an electronics manufacturing hub in Kochi has received in principle approval from the Department of Electronics & IT Industry.

Senior officials told Business Line that the detailed project report have to be submitted for getting the final approval to set up the electronic cluster (EMC) with quality infrastructure matching international standards in the 75 acres owned by Kinfra in Kakkanad.

The project with an outlay of Rs. 250 crore is intended to create an industrial park with all modern facilities exclusively for electronics industry. The project is to be developed with the financial assistance from the Centre under the Electronic Manufacturing Cluster Scheme, the officials said.

Talent pool

Kerala with its vast talent pool consisting of engineering graduates/post-graduates and those with the diploma in electronics will present an attractive proposition to electronic manufacturing industry. Kochi is also centre of one of the largest exporters of electronics industry. The completion of the project would help attract investment to the State as well as creating more job opportunities.

According to officials, KINFRA proposes to develop infrastructure facilities of developed land, dedicated power, continuous water supply, communication facilities, offering plug and play arrangement to EMC for easy start up of industrial units at minimum cost and time. They would also be eligible to government subsidies under the MSIP of DE&ITy.

Highest productivity

Kochi being the industrial and commercial capital of Kerala and with the commissioning of the major projects like Vallarpadam Terminal, the opportunity for setting up new export-oriented as well as domestic electronics manufacturing units is very high.

Quoting World Bank-CII study on “Competitiveness of Indian Manufacturing,” the officials said that Kerala has the highest labour productivity among all States, the lowest median cost for power and the lowest delays for Customs clearances for imports and exports.
