Coffee output expected to reach new high this marketing year

New Delhi: Due to adequate rains in the growing states and improved crop prospects, coffee production in India is expected to reach a new high of 355,600 tonnes in this marketing year, as per state-run Coffee Board. The country's coffee production already touched a record high of 327,000 tonnes in this coffee year 2014-15, which runs from October to September. The post blossom crop forecast for 2015-16 is estimated at 355,600 tonnes - suggesting an increase of 28,600 tonnes or 7.4 per cent over the final crop estimate of 2014-15. The production of Arabica variety is estimated  at 110,300 tonnes in 2015-16 as compared to 98,000 tonnes this year, while the production for Robusta variety is expected at 245,300 tonnes as against 229,000 tonnes in the previous period. According to the Coffee Board, most of the production increase is to be expected from the main coffee producing state of Karnataka, with total estimated output at 256,500 tonnes in 2015-16 compared to 233,230 in the current year. Further, coffee production in Kerala is expected to increase to 69,800 tonnes in 2015-16 as against 67,700 tonnes this year. In Tamil Nadu it is estimated to improve to 18,800 tonnes from 17,875 tonnes in the aforementioned period. Although India accounts for only 4-5 per cent of the world's coffee production, it exports 70-80 per cent of its produce, where Italy, Russia and Germany are the top three buyers of Indian coffee.
