Chennai: Mr Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, has stated that the government plans to double the number of airpots in India over the next two to three years. Regional air passenger traffic is expected to increase due to increased economic activity. The government has also released the draft UDAN (Uday Desh kaa Aam Nagrik) scheme, under which an all-inclusive fare for an one hour flight has been proposed to be Rs 2,500 (US$ 36.7). He also stated that 140 million people travel by air compared to the 130 million people traveling via air conditioned coaches in railways every year. Air passenger growth in India of over 10-11 per cent in the past ten years has reflected the increase in potential for air travel. To cater to such demand and overcome the capacity constraints at existing airports, the government aims to triple existing airport capacity.
