Govt sets aside Rs500 crore for HRIDAY scheme

New Delhi: The government has set aside Rs.500 crore for the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) that was announced in the budget last year. The first phase of the scheme, which aims at preserving and revitalizing heritage cities in India, has been approved by the ministry of urban development.
The 12 cities in the first phase are Varanasi, Amritsar, Ajmer, Mathura, Gaya, Kanchipuram, Vellankani, Badami, Amaravati, Warangal, Puri and Dwarka, minister of state for culture Mahesh Sharma said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
The National Institute of Urban Affairs will act as the national project management unit for the HRIDAY scheme. In last year’s budget, finance minister Arun Jaitley had allocated Rs.200 crore for HRIDAY.
