Honeywell partners Tata to develop turbocharged petrol engine

New Delhi: Honeywell BSE -0.87 % Turbo Technologies has partnered with Tata to develop their first ever petrol turbocharged engine. The new Tata Revotron 1.2T engine launched in the 2014 Tata Zest delivers improved power and torque and a multi-drive mode, according to a Honeywell statement.

Honeywell's engineering teams in Pune and Bangalore leveraged local capabilities and global expertise in petrol turbo technologies to address the specific needs of a local customer.

The Revotron 1.2T features Honeywell's second generation petrol turbo technology, which incorporates advances in aerodynamics and bearing systems, and delivers improved fuel economy and driving performance in a 30% smaller space, lowering the overall system complexity and cost, the release said.

"We are proud to have met the challenge and helped Tata launch its new petrol engine in the exciting new Zest," said Milind Godbole, managing director, Honeywell Turbo Technologies, India. "Honeywell has a strong presence in India and embraces its opportunity to contribute to the accelerating 'Made in India' campaign which is significant for moving its auto industry forward as a global player."

Downsized petrol turbocharged vehicles deliver up to 20% better fuel-economy and better torque than larger non-turbocharged engines with similar power output.

Honeywell expects petrol applications to drive the adoption of performance enhancing turbocharger technologies in India, just as they are in Europe given that both markets already have turbo diesel penetration of above 50%.
