Passenger vehicle sales up on demand for compact SUVs: SIAM data

New Delhi: Sales of passenger vehicles increased by 6.26 per cent to 2,31,640 units in May driven by demand for compact utility vehicles such as Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Creta, as per data released by industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

While sales of passenger cars recorded a marginal drop of 0.86 per cent to 1,58,996 units last month, utility vehicles sale shot up by 35.88 per cent to 58,793 units.

Sales of commercial vehicles went up by 16.89 per cent to 57,089 units in May. Demand for two-wheelers too rose by 9.75 per cent to 15,15,556 units in back of strong scooter sales.

While sales of scooters shot up by 24.97 per cent to 4,54,992 units, those of motorcycles rose modestly by 3.35 per cent to 9,85,158 units.
