Agartala: The Union government has sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore (US$ 156.2 million) for a 15-km India-Bangladesh railway project which will link Agartala in Tripura with Bangladesh's Akhaura railway station. Out of these 15 km, five km falls within Indian territory whereas the rest is in Bangladesh. The new railway connectivity between Tripura and Bangladesh will boost socio-economic, trade and business ties between India and Bangladesh. Further the rail link will also reduce the time required to travel about 1,650 km between Agartala in Tripura and Kolkata in West Bengal to just 515 km due to the rail link passing through Bangladesh.
