Skill training provided to over 3.8 million urban poor: Union Government

New Delhi: Over 3.8 million urban poor have been provided with skill development training in order to enable them either either self-employed or obtain a salaried job with assistance from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. Skill development of urban poor was undertaken under the 'Skill Training for Employment Promotion Amongst Urban Poor (STEP-UP)' of the erstwhile Swarn Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojana started in 1997 and the 'Employment through Skill Training and Placement' component of the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) which was introduced in 2013. According to Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Mr Babul Supriyo, under STEP-UP, 3.526 million urban poor were assisted to upgrade their skills while another 0.31 million were helped under NULM. Madhya Pradesh led the list of performers having assisted 0.51 million urban poor, followed by Maharashtra (0.49 million), Uttar Pradesh (0.45 million), Karnataka (0.41 million), Tamil Nadu (0.33 million), Andhra Pradesh (0.33 million), Gujarat (0.22 million), Bihar (0.21 million), West Bengal (0.2 million) and Rajasthan (0.11 million).
