Snapdeal ties up with Mapmygenome to offer personal genomic service

Bengaluru: Snapdeal.com, the Indian online retailer backed by EBay and billionaire Azim Premji has tied up with Mapmygenome to offer personal genome mapping test service.

It will offer a range of personal genomic services that predict diseases and pinpoint the right medicine for an individual.

We have online platform and tie ups with hospital, but we wanted to reach out to more people and ecommerce is much easier way to reach," said Anu Acharya, chief executive of Mapmygenome. " I come from Bikaner and people can order the service from even such small towns."

Hyderabad-based Mapmygenome, launched last April, tests for nearly 100 conditions and has provided genetic assessment for hundreds of customers so far. While most come from metros, a growing number from smaller towns, such as Vijaywada, Coimbatore, Kharagpur and Jalandhar, are turning to the startup to test for diseases like cardiovascular, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and male pattern baldness.

"The collaboration will help us in reaching out to over 25 million members across the country and enable them to understand the gene-disease interaction better," said Amit Maheshwari, vice president, Snapdeal.com.

Maheshwari said Snapdeal.com is forecasted to cross $150 million (Rs 914 crore) in sales in sports, fitness and health categories by the end of this fiscal year. He said the category for online retailer has seen 20% month-on-month growth in the last six months.

With an assortment size of over 22,000 products the retailer offers health and wellness products across a diverse range of categories including nutrition products like sports nutrition, vitamins, Ayurveda and organic products.
