According to the data released by Grant Thornton India, an accounting and consulting firm, the total merger and acquisitions (M&A) and private equity (PE) deals in the month of May 2014 were valued at US$ 5.28 billion (95 deals) as compared to US$ 3.64 billion (77 deals) in the month of May 2013.

Moreover, the total value of outbound deals (Indian companies acquiring businesses outside India) in May 2014 was US$ 87 million (6 deals). The total value of inbound deals (foreign companies or their subsidiaries acquiring Indian businesses) in May 2014 were valued at US$ 1.27 billion (15 deals) as compared to US$ 107 million (9 deals) during the corresponding month in 2013.

Domestic market continued to be buoyant in May 2014 both in terms of value and volume. The total value of domestic deals in the month of May 2014 were US$ 2.46 billion (26 deals) as compared to US$ 891 million (22 deals) during the corresponding month in 2013.

The top 5 M&A sectors were identified as IT & ITeS, banking & financial services, pharmaceuticals, healthcare & biotechnology, media & entertainment and infrastructure management.
