Jan Dhan gives fillip to government's mission of financial inclusion as more people sign up
Government of India’s ‘Jan Dhan’ initiative for financial inclusion is gaining momentum, as the number of bank accounts opened by July 15, 2015 has more than doubled to 169 million from 68.7 million at end of October 2014, while account balance has quadrupled to Rs 20,288 crore (US$ 3.2 billion) from Rs 5,180 (US$ 810 million) during the same period.
India's annual solar investments to surpass those in coal by 2020-Deutsche Bank report
Investments in solar capacity addition in India are expected to exceed investments in coal based power capacity by 2019-20, as per a Deutsche Bank report, which states that US$ 35 billion of commitments have already been made by global companies such as SunEdison, SoftBank, Foxconn, Trina Solar and others. The Government of India is targeting a five-fold increase in solar power capacity to 100,000 MW by 2022 from 20,000 MW.
Atomic Minerals Directorate-led team discovers uranium reserves in Srisailam forests
A joint research team of the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) and Osmania University has discovered significant quantity of uranium reserves in the Srisailam forests of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, thereby boosting India's plan to build a ‘Strategic Uranium Reserve’ for generating nuclear power.
