The powerloom industry has traditionally been one of the cornerstones of the Indian economy in terms of foreign exchange earnings and employment. The Indian textile industry is currently estimated to be worth US$ 55 billion. The industry accounts for 14 per cent of industrial productions, which is 4 per cent of GDP.
The powerloom industry is equipped with approximately 2.29 million looms, concentrated in clusters across the country – Erode, Salem, Madurai, Ichalkarnaji, Solapur, Bhiwandi, Bhilwara and Malegaon, to name a few.

Production in the powerloom sector has increased by 4.37 per cent between 2005-06 to 2010-11. The industry accounted for almost 93 per cent of woven fabrics manufactured in India.

Approximately 37,000 million sq m of fabric is produced annually, employing over 5.7 million workers.

The domestic textiles market is witnessing strong growth owing to rapid growth in organised retail and disposable incomes, and the market is estimated to grow to over US$ 106 billion by 2015.
Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council
The Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) is the nodal agency for the development and promotion of exports of powerloom products. The council undertakes direct promotional activities such as participation in international trade shows, sending and hosting trade delegations and sustained image building excercises through advertisements abroad, publications and audiovisuals.
