nate either wet or ‘dry waste’. Soiled waste makes dry waste infec-
tious, besides making it wet and contaminated, which no one
will want to touch or use for making anything out of it. Dry waste
when collected and stored clean can generate jobs, products and
revenues. Even low investment enterprises like handmade paper
can thrive on it. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste, on
the other hand, if allowed to contaminate the other four wastes,
prevents their separation or treatment. Pure C&Dwaste is a huge
resource for a small or a large scale unit that can generate any-
thing from it—building and construction material, pavement
blocks, pre-fab housing material and contribute to road building
and strengthening of infrastructure like flyovers and bridges.
The economic implications of scientific waste management
are, hence, immense. “If we pollute the air or defile the surface
and ground water and poison the soil, the toxic materials will
come back to us through air, water and food,” cautions Prof
Mani. Therefore, sensible and sustainable waste management
saves us from incalculable suffering and disaster. Efficient
waste management has a positive bearing on the economy.
With such a system in place, India can save 6 per cent of GDP.
The economic returns generated can further increase the effi-
ciency of waste management.
Urban Phenomenon
According to the
Waste Management Market in India 2015 Report
of Netscribes, increasing urbanisation has resulted in a con-
siderable increase in the volume of waste generated in India
due to the migration of rural population to the cities, leading
to high levels of waste creation. According to Dr Mani, “Waste
collection efficiency ranges between 70 per cent and 90 per
cent in major metro cities whereas in several smaller cities,
it is below 50 per cent.” Understandably, this opens up many
opportunities for waste
management players,
who are already step-
ping in to fill the gap.
In 2011, a research
report titled
The Solid
Waste Management
Sector in India: an Over-
view of Research and
Activity
, published by
the European Business
and Technology Centre,
forecast that the about
115,000 tonnes of solid
waste generated per
day would increase by
about 5 per cent annu-
ally. A Task Force (TF)
on Waste to Energy of
the Planning Commis-
sion, (in the context of
solid waste manage-
ment), published its
report in May 2014.
The report estimated
that untapped waste
