India is the ninth largest civil aviation market in the world and is also ranked fourth in domestic passenger volumes (45.3 million). It is expected to become world's third largest by 2020.
Total passenger traffic stood at a record 205.4 million (estimated) in FY12, registering a growth of 43.2 per cent as compared to 15.9 per cent growth in FY11.
Domestic passenger traffic expanded at 15.6 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over FY06-11. It is expected to touch 209 million by FY17. International passenger traffic rose 11.2 per cent over the same period and is set to touch 60 million by FY17.
Until recently, Airports Authority of India (AAI) was the only major player involved in developing and upgrading airports in India. Post liberalisation, private sector participation in the sector has been increasing.
