April auto sales report: Maruti Suzuki grows 23%, Nissan 39%, Royal Enfield 25%

New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) posted the best domestic monthly sales in April, selling 144,492 units and registering a 23.4% growth over 117,045 units of April 2016.

The previous best domestic performance by the top passenger vehicle company was 137,000 in September 2016.Maruti Suzuki’s exports dropped by over 29% from 9,524 units to 6,723 units in April. The total passenger vehicle sales (including exports) in April 2017 grew by 19.5% to 151,215 units.

New compacts such as the Ignis and Baleno drove the sales for MSI as the segment grew of 39.1% in April year-on-year. MSI’s utility vehicle sales also continued to be in full speed at 28%, thanks to the sustained popularity of Vitara Brezza and MPV Ertiga.

The company also sold 3,173 units of Dzire Tour, its sub-four metre for the taxi segment. An updated Dzire will be launched on May 16.

Maruti Suzuki’s sales grew at 9.8% in the last fiscal, during which it sold 15,68,603 units including exports. The profits also soared by 36.8% to Rs 7,337.7 crore.

Nissan Motor India posted a 39% growth in April 2017 as it sold 4,217 vehicles, including models of its subsidiary Datsun.

“Nissan is proud of the performance of the recently launched new Terrano and the continued confidence that customers are showing in the Datsun redi-GO. Across India, we are strengthening our footprint, introducing products and services that customers want and value,” Arun Malhotra, managing director of Nissan India, said in a statement.

The company launched an update of the Terrano on March 27, and also sells a Micra hatchback, Sunny sedan, Terrano and a sports car GT-R.

Nissan Motor India, a subsidiary of Japan-based Nissan Motor Company, eyes a 5% market share in India by 2020.

In the two wheeler segment, Indian cruising bike-maker Royal Enfield registered a 25% growth, selling a record number of 60,142 bikes (including exports) in last month as over April 2016 when a total of 48,197 units of RE bikes were sold.

Of these, 58,564 were sold in the country, while 1,578 were exports.

Royal Enfield last month also entered the fourth biggest two wheeler market in the world -- Brazil, where it opened its second direct distribution subsidiary outside India. In 2015, the company set up its first direct distribution subsidiary outside India -- Royal Enfield North America (RENA).
