With a steady growth trajectory, the FASTag toll collection system has been implemented with great success throughout India. The FASTag system's daily toll collection on April 29, 2023 set a record by collecting an all-time high of US$ 23.6 million (Rs. 193.15 crore) with 1.16 crore transactions recorded in one day.
Since the Government mandated FASTag in February, 2021, there are now 1,228 toll plazas operating under the FASTag system, including 339 state toll plazas. With approximately 6.9 crore FASTags issued to consumers and a penetration rate of almost 97%, the system has considerably enhanced user experience by lowering wait times at National Highway (NH) Fee Plazas.
Moreover, this has also led to a more accurate valuation of road assets enabling the country to attract further investments in its highway infrastructure.
In addition to being effective in collecting tolls, FASTag has made it simple and secure to pay parking fees at more than 140 parking lots in over 50 Indian cities.
The government is still committed to providing all road users with a seamless and trouble-free tolling experience. In this connection, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is actively striving to complete the required conditions for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based tolling system installation in order to provide free-flow tolling in India.
