The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad is working to ensure India emerges as a global leader in 6G technology, set for rollout by 2030, according to a telecommunications researcher at IIT Hyderabad, Mr. Kiran Kuchi. He noted that 6G will not just be a faster version of 5G but will integrate ubiquitous high-speed connectivity across urban and rural areas, land, oceans, and skies, with artificial intelligence (AI) at its core. Supported by multiple government agencies, IIT Hyderabad has already showcased 6G prototypes in the 7 GHz band, advanced massive MIMO antenna arrays, and satellite-compliant systems for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO). An indigenous low-power system-on-chip developed at the institute already enables terrestrial and satellite connectivity for civilian and defence applications, with work underway to scale this into high-performance 6G AI chipsets.

Professor  Mr. Kiran Kuchi, highlighted that these innovations are being incubated into start-ups, integrated into global standards, and steered towards commercialisation, positioning India as a technology supplier and standard-setter. 6G is expected to drive instantaneous Augmented Reality/ Virtual Reality (AR/VR) experiences, AI-enabled devices, autonomous mobility, and large-scale intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) applications, transforming sectors from agriculture to healthcare and defence. With a decade of indigenous R&D and a proactive policy framework, India aims to have its own technologies, products, and companies ready by 2030, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
