Mumbai: India has become the only country in the world after China to cross one billion mobile phone subscribers. The number of mobile phone subscribers in India reached 1.03 billion in October 2015, up 0.7 per cent from the previous month, as per the data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The size of India's mobile subscriber base is now more than triple the US population. The competition in the telecom industry is also high, as there are 12 telecom operators in India competing for subscribers. Bharti Airtel, India's largest carrier, has more than 200 million subscribers. The launch of Reliance Industries Ltd’s US$ 15 billion fourth-generation services in early 2016 is expected to intensify the competition further.
