Monsoon likely to escape unscathed from El Nino: IMD

New Delhi: India is expected to escape from the consequences of the El Nino weather pattern, which is expected to arrive towards the end of the monsoon season, thereby reducing the damage to the agricultural output during the season. The emergence of El Nino after July does not either indicate a weak start or deficient rains, as this weather pattern is only one of the many variables influencing the south-west monsoon. Forecasters in Japan and Australia have estimated a 40-50 chance of the El Nino weather pattern occurring in the later part of 2017. A weak El Nino would have only slight impact on crops such as wheat, palm oil, rice and oilseeds.
