PM Narendra Modi launches new scheme for power reforms in rural areas

Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the 'Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana' for power sector reforms in rural areas aiming to provide uninterrupted supply of electricity. This power scheme focuses on feeder separation (rural households and agricultural usage) and strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure, including metering at all levels in rural areas. The earlier scheme for rural electrification, Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) has been subsumed in the new scheme as its rural electrification component. Total outlay for the new scheme is Rs 76,000 crore (US$ 11.8 billion) out of which Central government shall provide grant of Rs 63,000 crore (US$ 9.8 billion). A total of Rs 14,680 crore (US$ 2.2 billion) worth projects have already been approved out of which projects amounting to Rs 5,827 crore (US$ 0.92 billion) have been approved for Bihar.
