Three foot overbridges finalised for Phase 2 of Delhi-Meerut Expressway

Ghaziabad: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has planned 15 pedestrian underpasses and three foot over bridges (FoBs) to be built under phase II of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) project. Officials said the pedestrian underpasses will be separate from the vehicle underpasses and be for exclusive movement of pedestrians.

Officials said that apart from the 15 pedestrian underpasses they have also finalised, three major FoBs which will help pedestrians to cross the 14 lanes of the DME project from one side to the other. The Noida Electronic City Metro station to Indirapuram FoB will be the longest of the three FoBs under the project.

“This FoB will be about 260-270 metres long and have ramps on both sides. The FoB will end near the CISF exit in Indirapuram. The second FoB will come up at Chijarsi ,which also witnesses major commuter movement. This will be about 100 metres long and will also have ramps,” RP Singh, project director, NHAI, said.

Kanchan Verma, vice-chairperson of the Ghaziabad Development Authority said she will consult with the DMRC and NHAI if the Electronic City to Indirapuram FoB can be linked to the nearest Metro station proposed under the Sector 62 to Mohan Nagar Metro extension.

NHAI officials said the third FoB — to be around 100 metres long with ramps on either side — will be built near Columbia Asia hospital.

“Each of the 15 underpasses will be 6 metres wide and 2.5 metres tall.The right of way [the total width of 14 lanes] of the highway is about 90 metres. So, constructing pedestrian underpasses is necessary,” Singh added.

Under the 19.2km stretch of DME’s phase II, the NHAI has also proposed the construction of 17 vehicular underpasses and one flyover.

In a recent meeting held by the divisional commissioner, officials decided to break phase II into three parts. Of these, the UP Gate to Vijay Nagar stretch is scheduled to be opened by May-end while the Vijay Nagar to Lal Kuan section is scheduled to be open by December this year.

The third stretch from Lal Kuan to Dasna is scheduled to open by mid-June.

The phase II project is pegged at Rs 1,989 crore and around 48% of it has been completed.
