Chennai: Wind turbine maker ReGen Powertech has forayed into the solar power sector with the launch of solar inverter devices which convert direct current (DC) produced by solar plants to alternate current(AC).
The Chennai-based company will use technology from German company Vensys. ReGen is currently using Vensys technology for its wind turbines.
ReGen would make the inverters at its manufacturing plants in Tada and Udaipur, Madhusudan Khemka, managing director of ReGen Powertech, said.
The product will be available in three variants - 1 megawatt (MW), 1.5 MW and 2 MW.
ReGen currently produces 'converters' - products which first convert AC power to DC and then back to AC to suit the required frequency- for windmills.
The launch of the solar inverter is an entry for the wind power company into the wind-solar and diesel-solar hybrid projects segment, Anirudh Khemka, head of renewables, hybrid and special initiatives at ReGen, said.
The inverters are India's first water-cooled machines and can operate in temperatures as high as 55 degrees Celsius, which makes them particularly suitable for India, according to him.
