The Indian wool and woollen textile industry is the seventh-largest in the world.The industry employed 2.7 million people in 2010-11. Rajasthan is the largest producer of wool, accounting for approximately 44 per cent of total production, followed by Haryana at 23 percent. Jammu & Kashmir is the third-largest contributor accounting for approximately 13 per cent share of total production. Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat also contribute in wool production.
India produced 43.2 million kg of indigenous raw wool during 2009-10. Out of the total indigenous raw wool production, only 5 per cent is apparel grade, while 10 per cent is coarse grade. The remaining 85 per cent is used for carpet manufacturing, which is a major source of export earnings.
Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council
The Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) participates in various international trade fairs and exhibitions, and facilitates member visits and trade delegations, etc.
