India-US relations continue to advance under a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with sustained engagement on trade negotiations, defence cooperation, critical technologies and energy security. Despite tariff-related challenges, both countries remain committed to expanding bilateral trade, strengthening Indo-Pacific cooperation and pursuing a mutually beneficial trade agreement through ongoing high-level dialogue.
Bilateral trade and economic engagement between India and the United States continues to expand, forming a core pillar of the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The United States remained India’s largest trading partner in FY25, with bilateral trade stood at US$ 132.14 billion, supported by strong growth in Indian exports to the U.S. market. India’s exports to the U.S. rose by 11.6% in FY25, reaching US$ 86.5 billion, reflecting resilient demand across sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods and services.
Trade negotiations between the two countries are progressing steadily, with both sides engaged in continuous discussions to conclude a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The first tranche of the India-U.S. trade agreement is reported to be near closure, aimed at addressing reciprocal tariffs and enhancing market access. According to the Indian government and policy think-tank ICRIER, despite recent tariff measures by the United States, only 7.38% of India’s total exports are materially affected, underscoring limited macroeconomic impact and the scope for resolution through negotiation and trade diversification. Indian authorities have highlighted that a successful trade agreement could significantly energise exports and support the shared objective of expanding bilateral trade to US$ 500 billion by 2030.
Economic cooperation is further supported by sustained policy dialogue and strong commercial interest from both sides. India continues to engage with the U.S. administration to strengthen supply-chain integration and secure fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade outcomes. With advanced negotiations underway and robust export performance, India-U.S. trade relations remain on a positive trajectory, anchored in long-term economic complementarities and shared growth objectives.
India-U.S. relations remain resilient and forward-looking, underpinned by a comprehensive global strategic partnership. Despite ongoing trade negotiations and tariff-related challenges, both countries continue to engage closely to advance cooperation in trade, defence, technology, energy and the Indo-Pacific. Sustained high-level dialogue and strong economic complementarities signal a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and achieving long-term strategic and commercial objectives.
