Mumbai: Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd on Thursday said it will generate 400 MW from solar power by 2022 through its planned rooftop solar project for its industrial and commercial consumers in the national capital.

As part of this, the company will offer its industrial and commercial consumers a scheme to opt for solar rooftop panels to cut power bills. Solar power is also seen to help ease demand seen during peak hours.

The company in June last year had commissioned a study by Energy and Environmental Economics (E3), a US energy consulting firm, to check the feasibility of the distribution utility’s grid integrated rooftop solar photovoltaic and demand response projects.

“The study’s findings suggest that TPDDL could support generation of more than 400 MW of rooftop solar power primarily through commercial and industrial consumers in its area of distribution in north and northwest Delhi by 2022,” the company said in a statement.

According to TPDDL, rooftop solar power generation can help Delhi meet its peak power requirement, which has been going up by 8-10% a year, the company said.

The peak load in the parts of Delhi where TPDDL supplies power is nearing 1,800 MW and an additional load of approximately of 600 MW is expected to come in by 2022. TPDDL did not disclose the amount of investment required to set up this rooftop solar project.
