India's Growing Role in Electronics Manufacturing Mirrors Global Trends.

India is steadily gaining ground in manufacturing, particularly in producing Apple's iPhones and other electronic devices, marking a shift from China. This transition is evident in the southern Indian industrial regions, notably Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, where Foxconn, a major Taiwanese-based player, is expanding its operations. Previously dominated by Chinese cities like Shenzhen and Zhengzhou, known for their prowess in iPhone production, Sriperumbudur now houses colossal dormitory complexes designed for 18,720 workers each, representing a substantial move toward India's manufacturing ambitions.

As part of a broader national manufacturing initiative, India is challenging China's dominance in iPhone production, with an estimated 13% of the world's iPhones assembled in India last year, predominantly in Tamil Nadu. Despite the "Make in India" campaign championed by Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi over almost a decade, manufacturing's contribution to the economy has stagnated at around 16%, slightly lower than the 2014 figures when Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi assumed office. This remains significantly below the manufacturing shares of economic powerhouses like China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea during their respective periods of rapid industrial growth. However, with a doubling of iPhone production expected in India by next year, the country continues to make strides in diversifying its manufacturing landscape.
