In Q3 2020, India 's mainstream PC market (including desktops, notebooks, and workstations) increased 9.2% year-on-year to touch an all-time high of 3.4 million shipments, led by America's HP, according to the most recent study by market tracker company IDC.

The July-September quarter has been India's highest PC quarter in the past seven years.

While the commercial segment had very little government and education programmes, with 2 million shipments, the consumer segment reported its highest quarter to date, rising 41.7% year-on-year and 167.2% quarterly.

Strong demand for notebook PCs, the report noted, would likely lead to strong shipments in Q4.

New entrants such as Xiaomi and Avita seized the opportunity but could not capture positions in the market segment's top 5 vendors list. As it ended its biggest quarter of shipments in the nation, Apple shipments also grew 19.4% year-on-year.

HP, which held the top position in 3Q20 with a 28.2% share, posted a good quarter in both the consumer and commercial segments, with a year-on-year rise of 16.8% in shipments compared to the same quarter last year. In the market segment, HP also retained its lead.

This demand is anticipated to stay significant as India remains under-pervaded in PCs, "said Mr. Bharath Shenoy, PC Devices market analyst at IDC India, on the production capacity for PCs for consumers." The increasing broadband connectivity in the country is making it easier for students to learn online. Hence, for at least a few more quarters, this opportunity will continue to be important for PC vendors.

Lenovo was slightly ahead of Dell in second place, with a 21.7% share of its total shipments.

With a share of 21.3% in the overall PC market, Dell Technologies secured third position as its shipments increased 18.2% year on year in 3Q20. It replaced Lenovo in the market segment following sequential decreases in the previous quarters.

With a 9.5% market share in 3Q20, Acer Group held its fourth spot. With a 27.1% share in 3Q20, it led the commercial desktop segment.

In its overall PC shipments, ASUS sustained its fifth position and posted 55.4% year-on-year growth. Because of its offline development, with the launch of its Expert series, it secured fourth place in the consumer segment and ventured into the commercial segment.

The business segment expanded slightly by 3.1% year-on-year due to the low volume of main major deals.

Notebook shipments increased year-on-year by 70.1%, while shipments in the SMBs segment grew year-on-year by 5.5% in 3Q20.

Companies are getting positioned for a greater mobile workforce and keep reducing their reliance on desktops in anticipation of a longer work from home opportunity. Mr. Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India, stated that SMBs have also begun to show more traction and will be crucial in maintaining continued growth in the commercial segment.

"As there is still a lot of potential demand for PCs in the country, suppliers that will be able to handle the supplies of these components will benefit more from this opportunity," Singh added.
