Telcos added 6.2 million 4G users in March 2023, highest in 20 months

According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), telecom operators Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea gained 6.2 million 4G users in March, 2023, which is the highest in 20 months. The 4G subscribers of Airtel were 235.78 million and that of Vodafone Idea were 124.82, at the end of March, 2023.

Analysts claim that the increase in 4G subscribers followed a change in the 2G user base as well as the highest 10 month increase in new mobile subscribers.

Jio added 3.05 million 4G users in March, the highest number in the previous six months, while Airtel added 2.04 million. By the end of March, there were nearly 812 million 4G subscribers among the wireless broadband subscriber base. About 0.4 million of the additional 6.6 million wireless broadband subscribers are 3G subscribers from BSNL.

Furthermore, at the end of March, the total mobile user base was 1.144 billion. Airtel and Jio added 1.04 million and 3.05 million mobile subscribers, respectively.

In terms of the wireless subscribers’ market, Reliance Jio has a share of 37.61% as of March, 2023, registering an increase from 37.41% in February, 2023. Bharti Airtel’s share also increased to 32.42%. Jio added nearly 0.31 million wireless segment subscribers, taking the total to 9.1 million and Airtel’s wireless subscriber base stood at 7.15 million at the end of March, 2023.

The total number of mobile subscribers increased in rural areas by 0.79 million to 516.38 million, while the number of subscribers in urban areas increased by 1.18 million to 627.54 million.

As per the data, the total number of active mobile users in March increased by nearly 6.7 million.
