Mumbai: According to a report commissioned by Vistara airline and conducted by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), Indian domestic air traffic is expected to increase three-fold to 218 million air travellers by FY2025 from 70 million in FY2015. Aviation industry is expected to contribute five per cent to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or US$ 250 billion by FY2025. In order to meet the rising demand, the report suggests a second green-field airport in addition to existing airports in the metros to handle the traffic. International traffic in India is expected to reach 120 million by the end of FY2015 and more than double to 254 million by FY2035. Indian domestic air traffic is expected to increase to 527 million by FY2035. The fleet strength is also expected to jump threefold to 1,084 by FY2025 from 394 in FY2015 and further to 2,564 by FY2035. In order to meet this increasing demand in the aviation sector, the report suggests increased investments in airport infrastructure, airspace management and skill development. Increased investments in the aviation industry are also expected to generate employment opportunities for 2.3 million people by FY2050.
