Phone maker Celkon to open manufacturing unit in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Celkon Impex Pvt. Ltd, which sells low-cost mobile handsets and tablet devices, will open its first manufacturing unit in the country in Hyderabad.

The plant will operate out of Medchal suburb in the city, and will start production next week after it is formally opened, the company said in a statement on Thursday. Celkon will begin manufacturing with four production lines and will add capacity gradually.

“We are very pleased to be one of the first companies to unveil our plans in setting up the manufacturing unit, this unit will greatly boost our ability to meet the demand for our game changing products as well as contribute to the overall ‘Make in India’ revolution promoted by the government of India,” Y. Guru, chairman and managing director of Celkon said in a statement.

The Hyderabad-based company took over an existing unit and installed machinery to manufacture the devices. The company did not disclose how much it is investing in the plant.

Celkon, which currently imports handsets from China, is primarily concentrated in South India and also exports devices to countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
