Coal India Limited (CIL) is a state-owned coal mining corporation which came into existence in November 1975. It has been awarded the status of Maharatna company. With its normal production of 79 million tonnes (MT) in the year of its establishment, Coal India Limited is today the world's largest coal producer. CIL circulated through 83 mining areas, seven full-owned coal producer subsidiaries and one mining scheme and consulting company spread across eight provincial states of India. CIL manages 200 other establishments such as workshops, hospitals. In addition, 27 technical and management training institutes and 76 vocational training institutes are also managed by CIL. Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM), a state-of-the-art management training ‘Centre of Excellence’ is the largest corporate training institute, operated under CIL and conducts multi-disciplinary management development programmes.

In September 2021, Coal India Limited launched ‘Spectral Enhancement SPE’, software for better assessment of coal resources.
In August 2021, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) collaborated with GAIL and BEML for a pilot project to leverage LNG as an alternative fuel for dual-fuel (LNG-diesel) operations of dump trucks.
In July 2021, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) collaborated with Accenture Solutions Private Ltd. to digitalise processes across seven mines for enhanced performance and output.

In March 2021, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) approved 32 new coal mining projects, of which 24 are expansion of the existing projects and the remaining are greenfield. Estimated cost of the project is Rs. 47,000 crore (US$ 6.47 billion).
In September 2020, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) announced plans to invest over Rs. 1.22 lakh crore (US$ 16.5 billion) on projects related to coal evacuation, exploration and clean coal technologies by 2023-24, to achieve 1 billion tonnes of fuel output target.
In August 2020, Coal India awarded a Rs. 2,900 crore (US$393.40 billion) contract to Belaz, a Belarus-based mining equipment manufacturer, to supply 96 dumpers with 240 tonnes capacity.
Coal India signed MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Indian Port Rail Corporation Limited (IPRCL) to execute its rail infrastructure works, construction of additional sidings, and rail line connectivity with railway main lines
