Coal India Limited (CIL) raised its coal production to 189.3 million tonnes (MTs) in the first quarter ending, June FY 2025. This was 13.8 MTs more in volume terms compared to corresponding quarter of FY 2024 posting nearly 8% growth.
Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 773.6 million tonnes (MTs) of coal in FY 2024 registering 10% growth over a high base of 703.2 MTs of FY 2023. This is the first instance that the company recorded double digit growth in two successive years since its inception. In volume terms the output expanded by 70.4 MTs the second ever high.

In September 2023, Coal India Limited (CIL) announced its plans to invest approximately Rs. 24,750 crore (US$ 3 billion) in the next few years on 61 First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects for eco-friendly coal transportation, which will transport coal using mechanised piped conveyors from production points to handling plants and silos with rapid loading systems, directly loading coal into rail wagons.

In March 2021, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) approved 32 new coal mining projects, of which 24 are expansion of the existing projects and the remaining are greenfield. Estimated cost of the project is Rs. 47,000 crore (US$ 6.47 billion).
In September 2020, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) announced plans to invest over Rs. 1.22 lakh crore (US$ 16.5 billion) on projects related to coal evacuation, exploration, and clean coal technologies by 2023-24, to achieve 1 billion tonnes of fuel output target.
In August 2020, Coal India awarded a Rs. 2,900 crore (US$ 393.40 million) contract to Belaz, a Belarus-based mining equipment manufacturer, to supply 96 dumpers with 240 tonnes capacity.
