Incorporated in 1958 as a Government of India fully owned public enterprise, NMDC is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. Since inception, it has been involved in the exploration of wide range of minerals including iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite, beach sands etc. NMDC is India's single largest iron ore producer, producing about 32 MT of iron ore from three fully mechanised mines (Bailadila Deposit-14/11C, Bailadila Deposit-5, 10/11A (Chhattisgarh State) and Donimalai Iron Ore Mines). The company has been categorised by the Department of Public Enterprises as "NAVRATNA" Public Sector Enterprise in 2008.

Cumulative production and sales figures until May 2021 stood at 5.91 MT and 6.39 MT, respectively, achieving 45% more production and 63% more sales over the corresponding period in the last year.
In 2021, NMDC aims to utilise 97% production capacity to manufacture 35 MT of iron ore. In FY21 (until January 2021), NMDC’s iron ore production stood at 25.66 MT

In December 2020, the long pending issue of Donimalai Iron ore mine (ML No.2396) of NMDC Ltd, which was suspended since November 2018, has finally concluded through the endeavor of the Government. Donimalai Iron ore mine, which has total concession area of 597.54 hectare and estimated resource of 149 MT shall increase the annual Iron ore production in the country by 7 MTPA. The operationalization of the mine would contribute a total of around Rs. 1,100 crore to the State exchequer per annum.
In August 2020, the Board of Directors of NMDC Limited approved the demerger of its upcoming three million tonne per annum capacity steel plant in Chhattisgarh.
NMDC and i-TIC Foundation, IIT Hyderabad, signed an agreement to support start-ups through a collaborative joint incubation program, NMDC Innovation & Incubation Centre (NICE)
