The Mahakumbh 2025, which began today in Prayagraj, is expected to generate trade worth approximately Rs. 2,00,000 crore (US$ 23.07 billion) in the region, as per the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). The month-long event will attract around 400 million visitors, significantly boosting local trade, tourism, and employment. CAIT estimates that the largest contributions will come from accommodation and tourism, with local hotels, guesthouses, and temporary lodging arrangements likely generating Rs. 40,000 crore (US$ 4.61 billion). Secretary General of CAIT, Mr. Praveen Khandelwal, stated that with an average expenditure of Rs. 5,000 (US$ 57.66) per person, total spending will exceed Rs. 2,00,000 crore (US$ 23.07 billion), covering areas such as accommodation, food, religious items, healthcare, and more.
Additional sectors such as food and beverages, including packaged items, meals, and drinks, are projected to contribute Rs. 20,000 crore (US$ 2.31 billion) to the trade. Religious items and offerings, including oil, lamps, idols, and incense sticks, will add another Rs. 20,000 crore (US$ 2.31 billion). Transportation, including local and interstate services, is expected to generate Rs. 10,000 crore (US$ 1.15 billion). Furthermore, tourism services like travel packages and tour guides will likely contribute Rs. 10,000 crore (US$ 1.15 billion). In comparison, temporary medical camps and Ayurvedic products could bring in Rs. 3,000 crore (US$ 345.98 million). Digital services such as e-ticketing, mobile charging stations, and Wi-Fi will generate Rs. 1,000 crore (US$ 115.33 million), and entertainment and media sectors, including advertising, are projected to contribute Rs. 10,000 crore (US$ 1.15 billion). The Uttar Pradesh government has highlighted the event's role in boosting the local economy and enhancing tourism on a global scale.
