An online survey reveals that 40% of couples in India spend over Rs. 7.5 lakh (US$ 8,750) on wedding venues, with 31% willing to spend more than Rs. 10 lakh (US$ 11,667). The average wedding venue cost has risen to Rs. 6 lakh (US$ 7,000) from Rs. 4.7 lakh (US$ 5,484) in 2023. The survey polled 2,000 couples nationwide, highlighting that 62% of couples getting married belong to Gen Z, marking a 49% increase from last year. Millennials now account for 30% of weddings, down from 54% in 2023. Indian weddings are becoming longer and more customised, with 35% lasting at least three days and 32% for four days or more. Couples are incorporating personal elements into their celebrations, such as customised outfits (61%), sustainable choices (27%), and intimate “first look” moments (21%).
The survey also shows shifting priorities in wedding planning. While cost remains important for 53% of couples, it is no longer the top concern. Instead, food, drinks, and overall guest experience have taken centre stage. Couples spend about 21% of their annual household income on weddings. Digital communication plays a crucial role, with 79% of couples using platforms like WhatsApp to share wedding details and websites becoming more common for managing invitations and schedules. “Weddings are no longer just about tradition—they are becoming personalised, unforgettable experiences,” said the Consumer marketing manager at WeddingWire India, Ms. Snigdha Johar.
