Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. Ram Mohan Naidu, said 66 airports are currently under development, as India focuses on expanding domestic and international air connectivity. Speaking on the sidelines of the Routes Asia 2027 curtain-raiser event, he said India would use the platform to engage with airlines and countries and explore new regional and international connectivity opportunities involving more than 115 airlines and 55 countries. Routes Asia 2027 is scheduled to be held in Delhi from March 16-18, 2027. The government plans to use the event to strengthen air links and support trade, tourism and wider economic activity. India is currently the third-largest domestic aviation market and is seeking to become the third-largest aviation market globally, with connectivity identified as an important component of this expansion.

India has also expanded its international air connectivity, with 55 international routes launched over the past 15 months, according to the minister. Stronger connectivity is expected to support trade, tourism and economic activity while improving links with the Indian diaspora and countries and businesses connected to India's manufacturing and supply chains. The government is also seeking to leverage free trade agreements by improving air links with international markets. Routes Asia 2027 is expected to provide a platform for discussions with airlines and countries on expanding regional and international connections. The focus on new routes and airport development comes as India's aviation sector continues to expand, with infrastructure development and stronger connectivity supporting access to emerging markets, tourism destinations and business centres.
