75 Lakh Households Targeted for Rooftop Solar Installations by December 2026

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has emerged as a key driver of India’s residential solar expansion, crossing 40 lakh beneficiary households within two years of its launch. Speaking at an event marking two years of the scheme, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Mr. Pralhad Joshi expressed confidence that the programme will surpass 75 lakh beneficiary households by December 2026. The Utility-Linked Aggregation (ULA) model has played a crucial role in accelerating implementation, with around 30 lakh rooftop solar installations already planned across states. More than 65 lakh applications are currently in the pipeline, reflecting strong public participation. The statement further emphasised that May 2026 recorded the highest-ever monthly performance under the scheme, with 3.16 lakh rooftop solar installations completed and 15,000 households added in a single day. It was further highlighted in the statement that the time required to add one lakh households has reduced from 118 days to less than eight days.

Launched on February 13, 2024, with an outlay of Rs. 75,021 crore (US$ 9.06 billion), PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has become the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar programme. More than one crore households have registered on the national portal, while over 33 lakh rooftop systems have been installed, adding more than 12 GW of capacity. The government has disbursed subsidies worth over Rs. 22,750 crore (US$ 2.45 billion), including Rs. 2,743 crore (US$ 295.7 million) in May 2026 alone. According to the ministry, over 17 lakh households have achieved zero electricity bills, while the scheme is contributing to India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030 and strengthening long-term energy security.
