IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet, contributed significantly to Airbus’s record-breaking year in 2024, with 58 aircraft deliveries, representing 7.6% of Airbus’s total deliveries. This marked the highest number of deliveries for IndiGo, surpassing 41 in 2023, 49 in 2022, and 42 in 2021. The airline had placed a record 500-plane order with Airbus in 2023. Meanwhile, Air India, including Vistara, took delivery of 14 planes, mostly from lessors, with its orders and deliveries expected soon. Airbus narrowly missed its delivery target of 770, delivering 766 aircraft, hindered by ongoing supply chain challenges. By December 2024, IndiGo had 930 undelivered planes, including 241 A320neo, 659 A321neo, and 30 A350-900s. Air India’s undelivered count stood at 344, including 210 A321neo and 90 A320neo aircraft.

IndiGo's decision to expand its fleet stems from a rough start to 2024, with 80 to 90 A320neo family aircraft grounded due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues. To mitigate this, the airline relied on wet-lease operations and new deliveries. Despite supply chain issues, IndiGo has maintained its expansion, overlapping with Air India's growth and merger plans. While Airbus has faced challenges in increasing A320 family production, periodic slot availability due to airline shutdowns has provided opportunities for IndiGo. The airline is also transitioning to a CFM-powered fleet, moving away from Pratt & Whitney engines. As 2025 progresses, IndiGo will introduce its first A321XLR, with significant fleet growth expected, especially with the new airports at Navi Mumbai and Jewar opening in Q1 FY25.
