The Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana (ABRY), a unique employment incentive scheme launched by the Central Government, has exceeded its initial employment-generating targets, demonstrating its success in supporting job creation and recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ABRY, which went into effect on October 1 of 2020, was created with the intention of encouraging the creation of new job possibilities by providing financial assistance to employers of enterprises that are enrolled with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). This scheme attempted to encourage the employment of unemployed people, including those who lost their jobs as a result of the epidemic, by covering both employee and employer contributions (24% of earnings) for businesses with up to 1000 employees.
Only the employee's EPF payments (12% of salaries) were paid for new employees in firms with more than 1000 workers. The scheme, which was open for registration until March 31, 2022, aimed to benefit around 7.18 million employees across India. The ABRY had already enrolled approximately 7.58 million new employees as of July 31, 2023, exceeding its initial employment generation target.
The ABRY plan has provided rewards of US$ 1.16 billion (Rs. 9,669.87 crore) to a total of 1,52,380 enterprises that have hired 60,44,155 new workers and met all eligibility requirements. The system ensures that rewards are disbursed to eligibility requirements that are met by beneficiary firms and employees on a monthly basis.
The initiative emphasises its significant contribution to the job market's resuscitation, emphasising its role in aiding economic recovery during these difficult times.
