India aims to achieve 70% female workforce participation by 2047 as a key milestone for Viksit Bharat, said the Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ms. Sumita Dawra. Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event, she highlighted that women’s labor force participation has risen from 23% in 2017-18 to approximately 42% in 2023-24, with growth across agriculture, manufacturing, and services. However, challenges like workplace biases, wage disparities, job security concerns, and limited leadership opportunities persist. She emphasised the need for mentorship programs and inclusive workplace policies to drive progress.
The government’s Union Budget 2025-26 reinforces this commitment, setting a 70% female economic engagement target by 2047. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, entrepreneurship, and startups hold significant potential for increasing women’s workforce participation. Experts noted women’s contributions to culture, fashion, and design, advocating for skill development programs, mentorship initiatives, and financial support for women-led businesses. Industry leaders urged collaboration between government and private sectors to create inclusive policies and sustainable employment opportunities, ensuring that women play a crucial role in shaping India’s economic future.
