Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's four-day visit to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman underlines India's proactive diplomacy in West Asia and Africa amidst regional challenges and emerging opportunities. At the time of departure, the Prime Minister mentioned India's deep civilisation bonds and strong contemporary partnerships with all three nations. The visit begins in Jordan (15–16 December), marking 75 years of diplomatic relations, where Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi will hold extensive discussions with His Majesty King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, and interact with the Indian community. Jordan remains a key pillar of stability in West Asia, sharing with India a strong commitment to countering terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation, while also contributing to India’s food security through fertilizer exports and investments in potash and phosphate sectors.
The Prime Minister will subsequently visit Ethiopia from 16 to 17 December on his first-ever visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Mr. Abiy Ahmed Ali. Addis Ababa assumes significance as the headquarters of the African Union, especially after India supported a permanent seat for the African Union at the G20 in 2023. His visit will include bilateral meetings, addressing a joint sitting of Parliament, and a meeting with the Indian diaspora, reiterating Ethiopia’s positioning within Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) and the Global South. The visit to Oman on 17-18 December marks 70 years of diplomatic relations, with talks expected to focus on strengthening the Strategic Partnership, including a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement covering trade, investment, energy, defence, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
