According to Mr. Suman Bery, the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, agriculture in India emerges as a sunrise sector, which can help take the Indian economy into its next phase of growth. This is evident from his comments made at the launch event for the roadmap to develop horticulture in Jammu and Kashmir, a union territory of India. According to him, the success of the sector will depend on its ability to improve yields, value addition, and farm productivity results through increased productivity and differentiated crop-specific policy frameworks rather than by following generic measures. Considering that India has large tracts of cultivable land, policies related to cereals, horticulture, and animal husbandry need to be addressed independently for better results.
Further to the above, Mr. Bery highlighted the point that the creation of jobs was not enough unless it led to increased labour productivity as well as income growth. According to him, there must be improvements in both land and labour productivity. In this regard, he pointed out the case of the Netherlands as a leading global benchmark of how the adoption of technology and optimal utilization of resources could transform agricultural exports despite limited land availability. This approach had immense potential for India, particularly for areas like Jammu and Kashmir, which could benefit from precision agriculture, protected cultivation, post-harvest management, and agricultural exports.
