The government is also emphasizing the potential of AI in transforming the agriculture sector, with a lofty promise that ‘smart adoption’ could increase the country’s economy by around Rs. 70,000 crore (US$ 7.71 billion). At the AI4 Agri 2026 conference in Mumbai, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Mr. Jitendra Singh, noted that AI-based solutions can enhance farm productivity, cut costs, and minimize risks for farmers. It was further noted that almost 60 crore people in the Global South depend on agriculture and face challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and health issues. AI can provide real-time weather forecasts, disaster planning, crop forecasting analysis, and early warnings, enabling farmers to make informed decisions.
The event brought together policymakers, scientists, and entrepreneurs to shape the future of AI-based farming and to facilitate greater collaboration. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Mr. Jitendra Singh called upon everyone to come together to make India a global leader in AI-based agricultural solutions, adding that innovation and technology adoption are the only ways to ensure food security and sustainable development. The two-day event included crucial deliberations and MoU signings to accelerate digital farming. By leveraging the power of advanced analytics and AI technology, India is working to enhance productivity, optimize resource allocation, and promote climate-resilient agriculture, reiterating the role of science and technology in rural development and the farm sector.
