Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare is projected to contribute Rs. 2,18,325 - 2,61,990 crore (US$ 25-30 billion) to India’s GDP by 2025, enhancing accessibility, diagnostics, and treatment outcomes, according to a Deloitte report. Government-backed initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 are shaping a digitally empowered healthcare ecosystem by ensuring responsible AI integration and stronger data security. The report, ‘Digital Healthcare – Top 10 Myths Debunked Digital Health & AI’, highlighted that AI adoption in healthcare has surpassed 40%, exceeding sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods (30%) and manufacturing (25%).

Life Sciences and Healthcare Industry Leader at Deloitte India, Mr. Joydeep Ghosh, noted that India’s digital healthcare ecosystem is evolving rapidly, with AI-powered diagnostics, medical technology innovations, and digital health records transforming patient care. India’s surgical consumables and disposables exports reached Rs. 13,973 crore (US$ 1.6 billion) in FY23, reflecting its growing global presence. However, regulatory alignment, workforce training, and infrastructure gaps must be addressed to unlock AI’s full potential. The report observed that AI adoption in healthcare lags behind banking and financial services due to data security concerns, regulatory fragmentation, and limited digital infrastructure in rural areas. Additionally, a shortage of AI-trained professionals hinders seamless integration into clinical workflows. While India has become a net exporter of surgical consumables, it remains dependent on imports for high-tech medical equipment, underscoring the need to strengthen domestic manufacturing. Strategic investments in training, infrastructure, and policy reforms can accelerate AI adoption, paving the way for a technologically advanced and self-reliant healthcare system.
