AI, Semiconductors and Railways to Drive India’s Next Growth Phase, Union Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and railways will play a central role in driving India’s next phase of economic growth and technological transformation. Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit 2026, Mr. Vaishnaw highlighted that India is witnessing rapid progress in railway modernisation, electronics manufacturing and semiconductor development, supported by policy reforms and strong infrastructure investments. He noted that India has added 36,000 kilometres of railway tracks and electrified 49,000 kilometres over the past decade, while railway capital expenditure has increased significantly to nearly Rs. 2.72 lakh crore (US$ 28.78 billion) in the last financial year. The Minister stated that India’s focus on quality, process efficiency and cost competitiveness is strengthening the country’s position as a global manufacturing and technology hub.

Mr. Vaishnaw also emphasised that AI represents one of the most transformative technological revolutions globally and stated that India must strategically leverage AI to improve productivity, manufacturing quality and operational efficiency across sectors. He highlighted that a new wave of electronics manufacturing facilities and semiconductor investments is laying the foundation for a technologically advanced and self-reliant India. The government has been actively promoting semiconductor manufacturing, digital infrastructure and AI innovation under initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission and IndiaAI Mission. Industry stakeholders noted that the combined growth of advanced manufacturing, railway infrastructure and digital technologies could significantly enhance India’s industrial competitiveness, employment generation and long-term economic resilience. The continued expansion of these sectors reflects the government’s broader objective of building a Viksit Bharat through technology-led and infrastructure-driven growth.
