Amazon India has forayed into the health-tech sector with the launch of Amazon Diagnostics, an at-home healthcare service enabling users to book lab tests, schedule appointments, and access digital reports via the Amazon app. Initially rolled out in Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, the service spans over 450 PIN codes and offers access to more than 800 diagnostic tests. Customers can request sample collection at home within 60 minutes and receive routine test reports in as little as six hours. The service is being implemented in partnership with Orange Health Labs, an accredited diagnostics provider.
Amazon Diagnostics aims to address gaps in India’s fragmented diagnostics sector by offering rapid sample collection, stringent data privacy, and a seamless user experience. Integrated with features such as real-time slot booking, map-based address validation, and digital report access, the platform complements Amazon Medical’s broader ecosystem, which includes teleconsultations and medicine delivery. Mr. Jayaramakrishnan Balasubramanian, who leads the Amazon Medical category, emphasised the company’s focus on meaningful, outcome-oriented healthcare. He noted that Amazon is not pursuing a deep discount model but will offer services at market price parity to ensure quality and trust. India’s Rs. 1,04,100 crore (US$ 12 billion) diagnostics industry, growing at 8% CAGR, remains under-penetrated, with only a 6% share in the overall healthcare market. Analysts project a 14% CAGR going forward, with preventive testing expected to rise beyond its current 12% share. As Amazon builds a connected health journey, experts see room for both new entrants and incumbents like Dr. Lal PathLabs and Metropolis, especially in routine and preventive care, where demand is rising amid growing non-communicable diseases.
